Weekend in the Capital

By bklyn1

Saturday: Arrive in D.C. without a hitch. Take the Metro to Foggy Bottom where our hotel is located. After grabbing a quick drink and bite to eat at Starbucks, we’re off to meet our friends at the Verizon Center for the Georgetown/Notre Dame basketball game. Notre Dame gets pummeled so we drown our sorrows at RFD. We retire to our hotel for an afternoon nap and then it’s out to Lounge 201 for our friends’ party.

Sunday: Breakfast at our hotel and then we’re off to visit some of the sites but it’s brutally cold out. We check out the Smithsonian’s Museum of Natural History and National Gallery of Art. Best of all, however, is the “prank” placement of Stephen Colbert in the National Portrait Gallery. We visit the gallery solely for the purpose of taking a photo next to it and we’re not alone as there’s a long line to do so!

Later that night we celebrate my wife’s birthday at seafood haven Hook, which was written up recently by Bon Appetit magazine. It’s a great meal – from the raw Yellowfin Tuna and Proseco to the Grilled Calamari with warm potato salad and basil walnut pesto to the parsley risotto with garlic escargot. For entrees, my wife has the wahoo and I have the weakfish. To top it off, we order the poached pear with blue cheese mousse. They include a birthday message to her and a candle to blow out so it’s a nice way to end the meal.

We walk back up M Street and duck into the bar at the Four Seasons Hotel to catch some of the Giants/Packers game. At halftime, we make our way back to our hotel. Giants win! Looking forward to the Super Bowl.

Monday: We hang out on M Street, checking out the shops and restaurants that dot this well-heeled street. We also check out the Georgetown campus before getting a drink at Mr. Smith’s. Eventually, we venture to Reagan National where a delay-filled trip home awaits. We should’ve been home at 8 but end up getting home closer to 11. Aargh.
