Where I’ve Been – Boozy Edition

July 11, 2009

Sunday – Made some St. Ginger cocktails and had a picnic in Prospect Park.

Tuesday – Met up with my friend MC for drinks at nearby Flatbush Farm Bar(n).

Wednesday – Met up with my friend HH for drinks at Lillie’s Bar in Union Square. This might be my new favorite bar in Union Square. Proceeded to treat myself to a Guinness (or two).

Thursday – Went wine tasting with our friends B & L in North Fork, Long Island. It was a lot of fun and the wine was good.

Friday – Met up with our friend KW at Brooklyn Social Club. I liked the old-school vibe and enjoyed the cocktail “Matt’s Ginger Old-Fashioned” but think I like Weather Up in Prospect Heights better. Afterwards, we had a great dinner at Joya – tasty Thai food in large portions and affordable prices plus a DJ spinning random tunes like Billy Ocean’s “Caribbean Queen” and a re-mix of Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m on Fire.”

Where I’ve Been

July 5, 2009

Sunday – Had a picnic in Prospect Park. Tried Franny’s pizza again that night and still don’t think it’s worth the hype. We liked Grimaldi’s much better.

Wednesday – Met up with my friend JY at Soda Bar in Prospect Heights. Gotta love that their happy hour goes from noon to 7pm. Afterwards, he grabbed a slice at Brooklyn Pizza Factory. Then we checked out Weather Up – a speakeasy type place with great decor and high-end cocktails. It has a nice vibe and a terrific outdoor patio. I tried the Sazerac (rye whiskey and bitters) and it went down easy.

Here’s a pic that I took of their drink menu:

Thursday – We ventured out to my friend LC’s condo in the Slope and have drinks on her balcony. It rained cats and dogs but we stayed dry and nice to see a rainbow appear afterwards…

Friday – We explored Fort Greene, Brooklyn and stumbled across 67 Burger. We got a cheeseburger with sauteed mushrooms and side order of fries. It was tasty and no wonder they’ve gotten good reviews. After, we headed to BAM to watch the film, Food Inc.

Week of 6/8

Monday – Returned from NC

Tuesday – Lower East Side – Checked out Pommes Frites and then met up with friends for drinks at Ace Bar

Wednesday – Midtown: Attended a B-school event

Thursday – Midtown: B-school alumni meeting

Friday – West Village: Met our friend at Vol de Nuit for some Belgian beer and pommes frites. Got some cupcakes at Magnolia and then had another drink and some grub at White Horse Tavern. Realized we’re too old to be out. In my drunken stupor, I throw down way too much for “cords” at the Apple Store so that I can connect our MacBook to our HDTV.

Saturday – Watched The Warriors on Netflix. Met our friends in Lower East Side for dinner at Katz’s Deli.

We finished the evening with drinks with my in-laws back at their hotel.

In the evening, I met up with them for dinner at Peperoncino.

Thursday – Time to say goodbye to the in-laws with dinner at Burrito Bar. It was nice seeing them.

Saturday – Saw the matinee showing of Terminator Salvation and it was pretty entertaining. Stopped by Trader Joe’s and picked up a few items before walking back home.

Monday – Picnic in Central Park with friends.

Vacation in V.I.

May 17, 2009

Last week, my wife and I headed to St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands for a little R&R.

She’s been busy with grad school and I with a number of work and non-work related activities, so a getaway was much needed.

We arrived around noon on a Thursday and were instantly greeted at the airport with shots of Cruzan rum.

We met up with my sister-in-law and her boyfriend (who live on the island!) and grabbed some West Indian food downtown. Afterwards, we checked into our hotel room and strolled the grounds. Later, we had some ceviche and pina coladas at a beachside restaurant called Coco Joe’s. Unfortunately, it was cloudy/rainy and the forecast for our stay did not look promising. That evening, we met up again with our fam and were treated to some good food and drinks at the Sushi Bar at The Ritz-Carlton.

The lineup included: edamame, fried baby eels with soba noodles, tuna sashimi plate (including my fave – toro), tuna nigiri with avocado, and hog snapper roll.

However, the best was dessert: banana and chocolate spring roll fried to perfection with vanilla ice cream and caramel dipping sauce.

On Friday, the sun finally came out so we headed out to our patio.

Then we took off to catch some rays at the beach.

In the evening, we tried West Indian roti and then ventured to Havana Blue for cocktails.

On Day 3, we spent the whole day at the beach.

Meanwhile, that night we had fish tacos and other appetizers during Happy Hour at Wikked

Day 4 brought us poolside…

That evening, our sister and her boyfriend made margaritas and pork tacos along with chips and tomatillo salsa.

My last day on the island took us to Lindquist Beach.

My final dinner was at North Side Bistro where we had wine, conch fritters, and steak. It was sad to leave the island!

Where I’ve Been

April 26, 2009

Wednesday – Attended a charity event at Bowlmor Lanes. Left early and got the happy hour special ($10 Kobe beef burger w/ drink at the bar) at Melt.

Thursday – Met up with our friends B&L at Socarrat Paella Bar and then had some champagne at Flute.

Saturday – Took the dog out to Prospect Park. Had our pseudo-suburban moment by getting wings at Buffalo Wild Wings, ice cream at Cold Stone Creamery, and shopping at Old Navy at Atlantic Terminal Mall. Also, endured a couple clunkers via Netflix this weekend – Twilight and Quantum of Solace. Both were bad!

Weekend Wrap-Up

March 30, 2009

Last week sucked – all work all the time. So this weekend I just took it easy.

Watched a pretty entertaining b-ball documentary by The Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch called Gunnin’ for that #1 Spot.

Saw an interesting piece on Cezanne on CBS News Sunday Morning.

Tried the double burger at Dram Shop Bar.

#33

March 22, 2009

I took the day off for my birthday last Thursday.

We headed to The Metropolitan Museum of Art in the afternoon. We hadn’t been since we moved here 3 years ago. I don’t know why, but we’re always amazed at how busy the city’s attractions are during a weekday. Thursday was no different as we were greeted by a long admission line. Thankfully, I was able to bypass it due to complimentary admission for employees of corporate sponsors.

Once in, we were pretty strategic about what we wanted to see – mainly focusing on modern art paintings (I really liked Stuart Davis‘ work) and the 19th century European paintings (Monet, Van Gogh, Matisse, etc.).

img_02421

We also checked out the “Walker Evans and the Picture Postcard” exhibition:

img_0243

Afterwards, we strolled down Madison Ave. before making our way to Union Square. We stopped in some shops and eventually landed at Flute, a champagne bar on 20th Street. Nothing like having some bubbly in the afternoon on a school day.

Then we took off for dinner and walked up 19th Street, checking out a cool wine store called Bottle Rocket along the way. We arrived at our destination, Socarrat Paella Bar just a little after it opened. A word of warning – they don’t take reservations and it’s literally one long bar so arrive early. Also, we were expecting my friend KW to come and they don’t allow patrons to save seats. Thankfully it wasn’t an issue but we probably should have done our research beforehand.

While waiting for our friend, we had some sangria and tapas (gambas al ajillo and croquetas). Later we tried the chorizo and calamari. All of it was very good but not necessarily exceptional. The real star of the show, however, is the namesake – Socarrat Paella (a mixture of both seafood and meat in the rice dish). Socarrat refers to the “carmelization of the bottom layer of a perfect paella when the liquid is absorbed and the rice is done.”

It didn’t fail to deliver and was probably the best paella we’ve had!

We topped it off with some vanilla flan for dessert.

Where I’ve Been

March 8, 2009

Weekend of 2/27 – Dinner at Al di La. Still our favorite neighborhood spot.

Weekend of 3/6 – Met up with my friend BC at Vol de Nuit in the Village. Got the recession special at Gray’s Papaya afterwards.
